Overview of GST Modification

GST Modification refers to the process of making changes or amendments to the details provided during the GST Registration process or in the GST Certificate. GST Registration is mandatory for businesses in India that fall under the threshold limit of Rs. 40 lakh or Rs. 20 lakh for special category states. The GST Registration certificate contains various details such as the legal name of the business, address of the principal place of business, additional place of business, and other relevant details.

  • GST Modification can be done in case of any changes required in the details entered during GST Registration or to switch from composite to normal scheme or vice versa.
  • However, it is not possible to switch from normal to composite scheme. For instance, if there is any mistake in the information provided during the registration process, one can make modifications in GST Registration by filling out Form GST REG 14.
  • In case there is any mistake in the PAN details provided during GST Registration, one cannot make modifications in the same GSTIN.
  • Instead, one needs to apply for a new GST Registration and surrender the existing GSTIN with incorrect PAN details.
  • It is important to note that any changes or modifications required after GST Registration should be made within the relevant time period and with the necessary approval from the proper jurisdictional officer in case of core field modifications.
  • Non-core field modifications do not require approval and are auto-updated after successful filing.

Registration Process of GST Modification

Step 1: A taxpayer must inform the tax authorities of any changes to their GST registration information within 15 days of the event leading to the modification.

Step 2: The taxpayer must file an application in Form GST REG 14, providing all required documents and a valid reason for the modification.

Step 3: The concerned officer will approve the application within 15 days after conducting due verification, and the modification will take effect from the date of the event.

Step 4: If the application is incomplete, incorrect, or not warranted, the officer will serve a notice in Form GST REG 03 requiring the applicant to submit additional information or clarification within 15 days.

Step 5: If the applicant provides acceptable information, the officer will approve the modification. If not, the officer will reject the application in Form GST REG 05.

Step 6: Modifications to the primary authorized signatory require the addition of a new signatory, and changes to the primary signatory details are not possible without fulfilling this condition.
