FSSAI, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, a government body that sets food safety standards and regulations for food businesses in India. FSSAI requires every food business operator to obtain a food license, which can be secured electronically through the Food Licensing & Registration System (FLRS). FSSAI Basic Registration is specifically for small FBOs and is distinct from FSSAI central and state licenses. With FLRS, applicants can track their application and obtain their license electronically in 35 States/Union Territories. FSSAI license is valid for 1-5 years and must be renewed within 30 days of expiration through the FLRS portal. Trust FSSAI to ensure the utmost food safety for all food businesses in India.

Discover a step-by-step guide for applying for FSSAI Basic Registration :
Step 1: Registration Form Submission: All petty FBOs must register themselves with the Registering Authority (RA) by submitting the registration form (Form A) along with the standard fee mentioned in Schedule 3.
Step 2: Compliance with Hygiene and Safety Norms: Petty food manufacturers must comply with hygiene and safety norms cited in Part I of Schedule 4 and provide a self-attested document cum declaration of adherence to these norms in the format cited in Annexure-1 with the registration form.
Step 3: Application Processing: The RA will consider the application form and may either accord registration, revoke it with written reasons, or grant notification for inspection within seven days of receipt of the registration form.
Step 4: Inspection: In case of inspection, the RA will accord registration after being satisfied with the conditions for safety, hygiene, and sanitary of the premises cited in Part II of Schedule 4 within 30 days.
Step 5: Commence Business: If registration is not accorded or revoked, or inspection does not take place within the stipulated time, the business owner can commence business, provided they meet any improvement directed by the RA later.
Step 6: Registration Certificate and Identification Card: The RA will issue a registration certificate and a photo identification card, which must be displayed at the business place or cart or vehicle at all times in case of petty food businesses.
Step 7: Annual Inspection: The RA or any authorized institution shall inspect the registered business place at least once a year to ensure compliance with regulations.
Note that registration cannot be refused without giving the applicant an opportunity to be heard and for reasons to be recorded in writing.

FSSAI License/ Registration refers to the fundamental legal consent required for conducting food business in India.
When the renewal application is applied between 90 days of its expiry but before its expiry date, the FBOs must pay a fine of Rs. 100 per in addition to renewal fees. Thus, to avoid a penalty of Rs. 100 per day, the FBOs must apply for renewal of the FSSAI registration between 120 to 90 days prior to its expiry.
FSSAI license is based on premise. A single FSSAI licence can be filed for for all types of food industry activities that take place at the same location.
The Licensing authority usually takes around a week or so to grant the Basic FSSAI registration from the date of application submission.
