An e-way bill, or Electronic Way Bill, is a digital document introduced under the Goods and Service Tax to monitor goods in transit. Any GST-registered individual who transports goods worth more than Rs.50,000 must have an E-way bill created on the GST Portal to comply with the regulations.

e-way Bill is a document required for the movement of goods worth more than INR 50,000 within India. It is an electronic waybill that needs to be generated on the GST portal before the transportation of goods starts.
The e-way Bill system was introduced under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime to facilitate the movement of goods and to ensure seamless inter-state transportation.
Reduced Transit Time | The e-Way Bill system allows for quick and hassle-free movement of goods across state borders, reducing transit time and increasing efficiency |
Improved Transparency | The e-Way Bill system promotes transparency by enabling real-time tracking of the movement of goods, ensuring that the consignee knows when to expect the delivery of the goods |
Reduced Tax Evasion | The e-Way Bill system is designed to reduce tax evasion by providing a digital trail of the goods being transported, which makes it difficult for tax evaders to escape scrutiny |
Reduction in paperwork | The e-Way Bill system eliminates the need for paper-based documentation, making it more convenient and cost-effective for businesses to transport their goods |
Enhanced efficiency | The e-Way Bill system allows for the automatic calculation of taxes and other charges, reducing the time and effort required to manually calculate these charges |
Compliance with GST laws | The e-Way Bill system is mandatory for the transportation of goods worth over Rs. 50,000, ensuring that businesses comply with the GST laws |
Step 1: Login to the e-Way Bill generation portal using your GST and transporter registration details at https://ewaybill.nic.in/.
Step 2: From the e-Way bill main menu page, select the “Generate New” option to create a new e-Way Bill.
Step 3: Fill in the required details in the e-Way Bill generation form, including the supplier and recipient details along with their GSTIN, if applicable. Enter the product name, description, HSN code, quantity, unit, value, tax rate, and applicable IGST, CGST, or SGST rates. Also, enter the approximate distance of transport, transporter name, and ID.
Step 4: After filling in all the necessary details, click on the “”SUBMIT”” button to generate the e-Way Bill. The portal will display the e-Way Bill number and QR Code containing all the details in digital format. Provide a printed copy of the bill to the transporter.
Step 5: A consolidated e-Way Bill can be created by providing the e-Way Bill number in the required field. Click on “”SUBMIT”” to generate the consolidated e-Way Bill.
Note that an e-Way Bill can be updated if it is not due on its validity. Details on the transporter, consignment, consignor, and GSTIN of both parties can be updated in the existing e-Way Bill.
1. Invoice/ Bill of supply/ Challan relevant to the consignment of goods
2. In case of Transport by road- Transporter ID or the vehicle number
3. Transport by rail, air, or ship- Transporter ID, Transport document number, and date
For carrying products interstate or intrastate, the transporter is required to carry an e-Way Bill, which must be worth at least Rs. 50,000.
Once generated, the e-Way Bills are only valid for a short time. A 100-kilometer e-way bill is good for one day. The validity will be extended by one day for every extra 100 kilometres. The e-Way Bill shall be deemed void after the validity time has passed, and any further movement shall result in the seizure of the goods and penalties.
The term “trans-shipment of goods” refers to switching the mode of transportation or the vehicle used to move the products. The term “trans-shipment of commodities” refers, for example, to loading cargo from a large vehicle onto numerous small vehicles.
The consignor, consignee, or transporter of the goods can all produce an e-Way Bill. Generally, the e-Way Bill is produced by the owner or the supplier of the goods.
